It's now 2007 and it's been two years since I purchased this laptop. I've seen the various reviews written about this laptop here and I really don't know what to say about the negative ones. My laptop is used by my wife and myself everyday, plus it's used by several members of my family, so I guess that I can speak for how well it has held up to use and abuse so far. I have yet needed to take it in for repairs, but I have needed to perform a repair to it by myself. The repair was simple. It was the bezel that surrounds the display, and it recently broke in one place and I went online and purchased another and replaced it.
The only thing that I have ever upgraded early on and that was the memory. I maxed it out to a full 2gigs. I did switch out the Window XP Home Edition for the Professional version.
This is my second Toshiba laptop, and the only negative things that I can say about it is what I miss from my first Toshiba laptop. This laptop's audio/sound is very basic at least, and comes across as a little weak. The other thing that I miss is an expansion bay. The DVD is a permanent fixture where an expansion would have been, but I have learned to use an external USB hard drive to backup any data that I need.
This Toshiba has been a workhorse and the way that I see it is that it should last at least another two to three years before I need to replace it. Will I get a third Toshiba? It depends on the battles between my needs, my wants, and my pocketbook.

Toshiba is known as one of the BEST notebook manufactures on the world market today. Reliabily, ease of use and dependabilty is the key to their sucess.
M45-S165 is one deal not to pass up. I've had mine now for close to two years with no problems. I've upgraded from 512 to 1M (512X2) memory and well worth it. I think so much of Toshiba I bought a second unit for my son. The next laptop will be Toshiba. You get what you pay for and this is a steal for the price.

I bought this laptop for my husband less than a
year ago. He carries it back and forth to work in
a rigid case. A few months ago, the LCD screen began to fail,
with a line of dark blue running
across the screen diagonally. It has spread to where
the screen is unusable. Toshiba refuses to replace
this piece of hardware, despite it still being
under warranty, because it is "damaged."
Isn't the point of having a laptop to be able to
carry it with you? How can general use of the
screen be damaging to a computer? Clearly, the cover
to this unit, while very thin and attractive, is
way too flexible to support the screen properly
when opening and closing it. Less than a year old,
and Toshiba won't replace it.
I spent a total of 2 hours trying to speak with a customer support person,
and when I finally got one on the phone,
she was the rudest person I've ever dealt with.
Toshiba flat out refuses to honor their warranty. Don't buy from them.

This laptop is less than a year old, and it has already needed the hard drive replaced. Even though it's still under the 1 year Toshiba warranty, I opted to have it replaced by my trusted computer repairman. I upgraded to a 100GB hard drive from the 80GB that it came with. Since then, there has been NO problems and it's quite a fast machine. One other bad thing, is the battery life. Included is a 4 cell battery that comes with it. Make sure there is less than an hour with of work if you are using it without an AC adapter. I have searched and there are replacement batteries with 6, 8 and 12 cells. So I'm sure a new battery would correct the problem. Other than the hard drive and the low battery, this has been a wonderful laptop. It's easy to use, has a great 15.4" display with wonderful color. If you can find it on sale at 'Better-Buy' or 'Circuit Central' I'd take advantage of the weekly sales flyers. But for the money it is an average price for a few more than average options on and slightly better than average laptop. Just make sure you know a little about processors, RAM and GB to do an accurate comparison. Good luck.

I bought this laptop last year at Best Buy for school. I was excited to see it was only 800 dollars so I thought it was great. I've had it for a year and it hasn't done anything majorly bad. However, my battery lasts only for an hour, and it takes a while to completely load when I turn it on (this could be my own fault though.) I wish the battery lasted longer because I bought it for school. If you know you will be able to plug it in then it's great. For things like school, I would invest in a centrino computer opposed to a celeron. They last longer.
Anyone know where you can get a better battery for this one???
