Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Machine error 41
I have owned the MPC442C and got a error 41 over the weekend. It said call Brothers immediately. I call and was on hold for only 21 minutes. They said I was out of warranty and nothing could be done. I have about 8 ink cartridges in my desk new and thought of buying another Brothers machine to be able to use them, but not after research and this treatment. I am not going to buy another Brothers because of this poor customer service.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Stay away from Brother at all costs
Owned the Brother MFC and lived the nightmare of spending good money for nothing. You'll go through ink cartridges like paper towels because it will tell you that the cartridge is empty when it's 3/4 full and will refuse to print, and you'll go through this for a while only to end up with the "Machine Error 41" that comes with the defective print heads they put in these things - this shuts down the whole machine - you can't print, copy, fax, or anything else. Then after you've been on hold on the "help" line for over an hour, you get some office in Calcutta where the robot-like "service representative" will tell you that yes, they were indeed defective, and no, they're not going to fix your machine. It's $150 to repair this which is obviously more than the cost of a new product. I went to a local Brother service center, and they have stacks of these things in for the same issue. I didn't even have to say what was wrong, they looked at it and said "Machine Error 41?" Uh-huh...

You'd be better off just burning the money for fun than to buy this thing. Little wonder there's a class-action lawsuit in the making for buyers of these money-suckers. When a company makes a defective product, and knows it, then basically tells you it's your problem, that's a company to stay away from. They used to call that kind of thing "theft".

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great machine at a great price
I've owned this multifunction machine for a year now, and am VERY pleased with it. I use it as a family network printer, super G3 fax machine, and color copier. Its ink use is typical for my other printers (Canon, Epson). For this price, or even twice this price, this is a great machine.

As of August 2007, this machine is still performing like a champ. Have it hooked up to a network of Macs, and frequently use it as a fax machine as well. Haven't tried the scanning ability. Still satisfied with ink use vs. other printers.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - It will suck you dry...
I have to agree with the other reviews on this device. It is ok to decent as a fax machine and a document scanner. I use it with the included PaperPort software to scan documents (recepits, etc) to PDF for archiving.

I also use it to send faxes about once a week or so. The device works well as a fax machine.

The ONLY time I use this device to print is to print out fax status sheets (as evidence that a fax was sent successfully). I have had this machine for less than 6 months and maybe printed 25 or so pages (black only) from the printer. I am on my second black ink cartridge and it is almost gone. I am am now out of color ink that came with the printer even though I have never printed in color. This is insane. How can a printer use that much ink and not be deemed defective! The printer will not function at all if even one of the cartridges is empty. I will not be buying anymore ink for this evil machine. I will use it strictly as a scanner and a fax (outgoing only since I can not print) for a little while longer... then it is off to the trash-heap.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - So So Printer
Pros:
The only saving grace about this printer: I bought this printer at a sale for 30 bucks last year. So I didn't pay anywhere near what is advertised.
It's OK when you want to use the printer rarely.

CONS:
90 dollars for this printer - No way.
This machine runs out of ink - or at least pretends to. I have had to replace the black ink twice, even though the first cartridge was half full. And I print minimally in black. The same is true for the Color Cartridges. It will tell you the darn cartridge is empty even though it is at least 1/4th full.
Don't even try to print photos.

Bottomline: Decide what you want to use your printer for. You use it say once a week, print about half a dozen color/bw pages every week and you get it for 30$ or less. This printer is for you!
